I have made a list of top 9 essential digital marketing skills one needs to have to succeed as a digital marketer. And, yes I have just numbered them and not ranked them because I think each skill is equally important (if not more important).

1. Content Writing and Editing
This is a ‘must have’ skill for digital marketers. Content is the message you communicate to your prospects and if you can create good valuable content, then it will help you build a lasting relationship with your audience.
Content will always be the King.
SEO, SEM, Social Media Marketing and everything will not really function well if your content isn’t good.
Undeniably, WordPress is the best CMS (Content Management System) in the market today. About 25 percent of all the websites on the internet are powered by WordPress (including this site). If you are working with multiple clients, then chances are high that some or most of them will have a WordPress site, and it’s needless to say that if you know the platform, then it will let you help them out with much more ease and reliability.
3. Graphic Design
Attractive and informative visuals are the best companions for a good content. You don’t really need to be a champion in graphic designing, just the basic understanding of how to create cover images, infographics, etc. will do. There are many online tools you can sign up with to start. I personally like and use Canva.
With the remarkable increase in visual consumption it is now one of the essential digital marketing skills.
4. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Yes, I know you have been waiting for this one. This is the most sought after skill in digital marketing. A lot of people ask me whether SEO is still that important. And I say yes, because of a simple fact that still today more than 90 percent of online information hunt begins with a search engine query.
If you are good at it, then you definitely stand out.
5. Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
Simply speaking, SEM is advertising on search engine result pages (SERPs). This is how it looks like.
It is a keyword based targeted method of advertising. Pay per Click or PPC is the cost model behind search engine marketing. With more and more businesses and products getting online, demand for SEM experts is rapidly going up.
6. Web Analytics
This is my favorite. Analytics is the boss of all essential digital marketing skills.
If you imagine digital marketing as a globe, then analytics is one hemisphere and all other things make up the other. Looking for success with an online marketing strategy which doesn’t include analytics is a wild goose chase.
Analytics should be intrinsic in every single activity you do with your digital marketing strategy. There are many analytics tools you should learn such as Google Analytics, Facebook Analytics, Twitter Analytics and Hubspot Analytics tools.
7. Social Media Marketing (SMM)
Social media has changed the way we communicate. It has influenced the marketing world more than anything else has ever done and it is still in full throttle.
Nearly one-third of the world’s population uses social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn etc. Someone who is well-versed in Social Media Optimization (SMO), Social Media Advertising and Engagement is a hands-down winner.
8. Mobile Marketing
As per Smart Insights, Apps constitute 89 percent of time spent on mobile media, with the rest 11 percent spent on websites.
There are almost a billion people using social media and search engines on mobile devices and there is no reason not to cater to such a huge audience and consumer base. Marketers who are skilled in making responsive websites and maximizing conversions on mobile devices are needed across the industry.
9. Email Marketing
A lot of people say that email marketing is old-school and I agree with the fact. But, it doesn’t make it less effective. The biggest plus point of email marketing is that it lets you be highly personal with your audience and prospects. Email marketers who are capable of creating the right content to share with the right audience at the right time are an essential part of any business today.
To sum up
There are many online marketing courses which can help you build such skills for digital marketing but I must tell you that just doing a course will not make you a pro. You need to have a good amount of hands on experience to become an expert in this field.
